Google Gears now supports Safari on OS X
You know that “Turbo” button in the upper-right corner of WordPress 2.6 (and WordPress.com)? That button uses Google Gears to store static WordPress admin files locally, speeding up your WordPress admin experience. Until now, Gears was only available to people running Firefox or Internet Explorer. As of today, people using Safari on OS X can also play. I just activated it for this blog, and it worked without a hitch!

Well actually, it was working quite a few days back. I was surprised no one actually blogged about it then. Going through an admin is a breeze thanks to Google Gears!

I have my own web server at home on a very high speed network so I’m lucky to enjoy seemingly instant responses when navigating in my blogs — this being said, the Google Gears will likely make my admin browsing zippier too as I use Safari on my MacBook when I’m on the road.
Thanks for sharing this excellent news ; )

I have WP 2.6 (localised French version) and Google Gears installed on my Mac OS X 10.5.4 with Safari v 3.1.2. I see no button in the “upper right corner of WP”. What’s happening here?

I am using Google Gears on Mac for wordpress from Day 1.
Google gears is working since long on mac. I came here expecting a DMG or some package installer. Having it as a firefox extension is not cool.
Google gears should be made available on Mac as it is available on Windows. Sleek and binary-outside-browser.
Anyway thanks for posting this as those who missed it can update now.

Wow. This is great news! I am somewhat disappointed with this, however. I used to use a wonderful little browser called Omniweb on my Mac. It’s latest version is in alpha testing, and I don’t see how the Omnigroup can compete with Safari anymore. Omniweb has some magnificent features that make surfing an absolute joy, but they cannot maintain all these additional features and keep up with Safari as new Webkit versions are deployed.
Tack on to that the fact that iTunes automatically synchronizes my Safari bookmarks with my iPhone, and you see that a lot of third party browsers are slowly going to get gobbled up by the “big” browsers.
I imagine that Mozilla and especially Opera are going to suffer dearly as a result of the big push by Apple and Google.
The collateral damage in the browser wars ain’t going to be Internet Explorer, unfortunately.

I activated Gears for my blog (fused), and it didn’t make a noticable difference. I’m using FF3, and the same is true for gears, which is unfortunate.
Is there something I’m meant to be doing?

@George: I think it’s mainly noticeable if you use the rich editor, which uses a zillion images and scripts. Even then, the main thing Turbo mode does is provide a permanent cache for those files, so that they won’t drop out of your standard browser cache as you surf other sites. If they’re in your cache right now, you won’t notice much of a difference.

Well, so far, I haven’t managed to get it to work. I press turbo, but when I press “enable” in the ensuing dialog, nothing happens. It worked in FF. I wonder if Safari Stand has anything to do with this.
Also, is Gears enabled for nightly webkit releases, or the stable Safari release?
Thanks.
